The Process of Internal Alchemy

Jing - Your Essence
Taoists believe that prenatal Jing is passed to you by your ancestors at conception and is stored in the kidneys. It is a finite resource that cannot be replenished. Postnatal Jing conserves prenatal Jing and can be replenished by leading a healthy lifestyle.
Qi (Chi) - Your energy or vitality
It is thought that prenatal Qi is conserved by the cultivation of postnatal Qi and can also be replenished by following a healthy lifestyle.
Shen - Your spirit/mind
The cultivation of Shen is said to provide for a calm mind and strong spirit and can lead ultimately to Wu Wei.
Wu Wei
The fundamental Taoist belief of non action. This is not to be taken literally, it refers to surrendering to the natural flow of how things are, trusting spontaneous responses and acceptance that actions should be based on need, rather than greed or ego.
Dantian
This is likened to a cauldron where the internal alchemy takes place.
Yin and Yang
The complementary but opposing principles of nature, whose interaction influences the destinies of all things.
Practice
Exercises such as Tai Chi Chuan & Qi Gong (Chi Kung) are said to enhance this process of internal alchemy. The combination of mental intent and the dynamic interactions of Yin and Yang, are manifested in focused, precise physical movements, which help to relax the mind and focus the breath to the Lower Dantian.
